Christmas in Prague with children
Hours, child fares and cobbles for Prague's 2026/27 Christmas markets, with 2025 stall prices and how Czech families spend 24 December. Darkness after 16:00, indoor places in the rain, and the published Ježíšek letter box in Karlín are included.

When the squares fill up
Old Town Square Christmas Market and Wenceslas Square Christmas Market both run from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, daily 10:00–22:00, with free entry. Náměstí Míru Christmas Market runs from 20 November to 24 December 2026, daily 10:00–20:00. Náměstí Republiky is confirmed from 25 November to 24 December 2026; 2026 hours have not been published. Tylovo Square Christmas Market is confirmed from 26 November to 24 December 2026; hours have not been published.
Late December sunrise is around 08:00 and sunset around 16:05–16:09. The two main squares are at their calmest from opening until about 16:00. After that it is dark, and they get very full. The Christmas tree on Old Town Square is due to be lit on 28 November 2026. Show times for 2026/27 have not been published.
Advent Saturday farmers' markets on 28 November, 5 December, 12 December and 19 December 2026 finish in the early afternoon: Náplavka and Kulaťák 08:00–14:00, Heřmaňák 9:00–13:00 in December.
Cobbles and pushchairs
The streets around Old Town Square are cobbled. A pushchair is slow there once stalls occupy the square. Wenceslas Square is a wide, sloping boulevard, with the market on the lower part towards Můstek. That is a different walking surface from the Old Town cobbles, but it remains a busy public square. Náměstí Míru, in front of the Church of St Ludmila, Tylovo náměstí and náměstí Republiky sit outside the tightest medieval streets. No step-free map has been published for any of these sites.
Public transport with children
On PID services in Prague zones P, 0 and B, children under 15 travel free. Children under 6 must travel with a person over 10. Ages 10–15 must prove age with photo ID showing name and date of birth; a passport is accepted. One adult accompanying a child under 3 also travels free in Prague if the child's age is proved.
From 1 January 2026 a full-fare 30-minute ticket is 36 CZK in the PID Lítačka app (paper 39 CZK) and a 90-minute ticket is 46 CZK in the app (paper 50 CZK). Paper tickets must be validated once in a yellow validator. The on-the-spot fine from 1 January 2026 is 1,200 CZK.
Václav Havel Airport is not on the metro. Trolleybus 59 to Nádraží Veleslavín (metro A) typically takes about 35–50 minutes to the centre and needs a 90-minute ticket. PID Christmas and New Year 2026/27 timetables were not published as of 21 September 2026.
Cold weather, toilets and going indoors
December highs are typically about 2–4 °C and night lows about −2 to 0 °C. A white Christmas in central Prague is not typical; rain is more common than lying snow. Public toilets at the markets are not covered in the published 2026 listings. Use cafés, galleries and shopping centres.
Near Old Town Square: Old Town Hall, the Church of Our Lady before Týn, Kinský Palace (National Gallery) and the House at the Stone Bell. Near Wenceslas Square: the National Museum and Lucerna passage. Near Náměstí Republiky: the Municipal House and Palladium. The Jewish Museum in Prague is closed on Saturdays; on 24 December 2026 it is published as 09:00–14:00. Prague Castle and National Museum Christmas 2026 hours were not published as of September 2026.
Food and 2025 stall prices
Prices below are approximate 2025-season prices that stalls set themselves. 2026/27 stall prices have not been published. Trdelník is a spit-roasted spiral pastry, often filled with ice cream or Nutella. It is not a traditional Czech Christmas food. At the 2025 main Prague markets it was typically 100 CZK plain and 100–180 CZK with extras. Grilled sausage (klobása) in a baguette is an ordinary market snack, not Christmas Eve dinner, and is stall food many children will eat. Svařák and medovina are alcoholic. In 2025, svařák (usually 0.2 l) was 100 CZK at Old Town and Wenceslas and about 60–100 CZK at other Prague markets, plus a cup deposit. Medovina was about 80–130 CZK depending on stall and measure. Some stalls accept cards; many prefer or require cash in Czech koruny. Euros are not legal tender.
Ježíšek and 24 December
Czech children do not wait for Santa on 25 December. Gifts are attributed to Ježíšek (the Christ Child) on the evening of 24 December, Štědrý den, the main family meal and present-giving. 24 December 2026 is a Thursday. Large shops over 200 m² must close from 12:00. Many Czech restaurants close for the family evening; some tourist restaurants stay open. 25 and 26 December 2026 are public holidays, and large shops over 200 m² are closed all day. In 2025 the Old Town and Wenceslas markets ran 10:00–14:00 on 24 December and 12:00–22:00 on 25–26 December. 2026 holiday hours are not fully published. When to stop
Typical December weather is grey, damp and near freezing, with darkness from about 16:00. If children are cold, tired or stuck in a dense crowd on the two main squares after dusk, going back to the hotel is the practical option.
